Below are some of the resources and documents that have been published by the UK government to help schools to promote and to become sustainable.

This government source gives a detailed and accurate representation of the sustainability in schools. It gives a simple layout with a clear contents table of the key points of how to be sustainable. It gives clear pointers of how to reduce water, energy and waste along with others. It however is a little old as it is 11 years old. This may mean that the guidance has changed, even though nothing has been published by the government, and is not precise, it is still able to give some valid pointers to look out for and some methods of improvement.

Summary of the pointers given in the document.

-Use building systems properly

-Upgrade heating controls

-Upgrade lighting

-Manage computing load

-Try to stop producing waste and only buy when necessary.

The guidance document also provides reasons why schools should become more sustainable as well as providing external links to extra advice and sources on each individual topic, which is useful as a guide to extra information.

Electricity - Buying for schools - Guidance - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

page accessed 02/11/21

This next source giving government advice showcases a range of methods of how to buy electricity and what details are needed for purchasing electricity for a school. This is a good article to use in terms of sustainable schools as it shows schools how they can access the right electricity for them to be sustainable, however this article gives most advice to schools who are trying to buy electricity for the cheapest price and not from sustainable sources making it a mostly uninformative in this situation.

Sustainability and climate change: a strategy for the education and children’s services systems - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Date accessed- 11/07/22

This article published in April 2022 by the department for education outlines a strategic approach to sustainable management in schools. This makes this a suitable source for research due to it being an authentic government source.

Some notes to take away from this include...

Climate education...

  • Learn about natural environment.
  • Support for teaching.
  • Learning in the natural environment.
Green skills and careers...

  • Net zero strategy.
  • Additional support for green jobs.
  • Support and guidance for green careers.
Education estate and digital infrastructure...
  • New builds (all new builds aim for net zero).
  • Existing estate improvements.
  • Resilience and adaption to nature.
  • Heating solutions.
  • Water strategy.
  • Reporting framework.
This article does provide more detail on each of these strategies which is very useful to schools when considering improvements to schools. The success of these may be limited due to uncontrollable factors. Ownership of this may be the largest factor as many schools are privately owned which limits what can be done to buildings to improve sustainability.
