case studies and sustainable examples

Below are some of the secondary research sources that provide us with an ideal picture of what sustainable schools and projects should look like.

Kingsmead-Case-Study.pdf (greenschoolsproject.org.uk) date accessed - 08/07/22

This case study, presented as a power-point style case study gives a clear flow of activities that have taken place at Kingsmead school over the course of three years, with support from the eco schools project.

The article gives us an idea of activities and statistics recovered over the three years. Below are some of the activities that have been carried out in each of the years.

Year 1 -12 year 12 students formed an eco-group. The amount or recycling going to landfill reduced by                     45%. As well, energy saving and vegetable growing programmes were introduced.

Year 2 - New y12's took on this role delving deeper into the schools energy and gas usage. An                                      environmental day was celebrated to encourage sustainability.

Year 3 - Another cohort of y12's joined and focused on the travel to school. Percentage of students                          walking to school increased from 32% to 50% in  this year. Along with other projects including                 growing in school, the school was awarded with an eco schools flag.

This article above gives details surrounding the department for educations plan to rebuild sustainable schools. It is a useful article to read as it gives an idea about how the government can support the sustainability of schools.
It outlines the commence of the work planned by the prime minister to rebuild up to 100 schools to help them meet modern sustainability goals. The planned work will see the schools reduce emissions and energy usage to help meet the UK goal of net zero by 2050.
The article features comments made by the education secretary at the time Nadhim Zahawi suggesting that this will commence a world class rebuild of facilities aiming for net zero opperations of the schools.

This article produced and published by the university of bath gives an idea about the sustainable development in schools and how this can be managed. It also outlines what a sustainable sustainable school looks like. One key thing to take away from this article is the diagram below that gives a clear visualisation of where the most energy is used.

This Youtube video published by the green schools project gives a promotional perspective as to why the schools should join the green schools project. this video to some extent is useful as it uses the Kingsmead school as a case study throughout the video, as referenced previously. It is useful as it gives the opinions of members of the school who are involved in the scheme. Although this is a useful video, it is now slightly outdated, as it was published in 2016 therefore making this irrelevant to some extent.

This article is a good article to use due to its speech quotes where people have been interviewed. It does however have limitations due to its heavy advertisement load. Some key points to take away from this article regarding the sustainability aspect could be.

The article states that the school has reduced food waste be 20 % after joining the lets go zero campaign.

It also outlines the other ways that the school are playing their part by litter picking and improving biodiversity across the school grounds. As well, they are creating wildlife boundaries around the school to encourage animals and increase biodiversity on site.

This article is a good source due to being published by an education news site, even though it follows the same flow as the previous article detailing  progress in Francis Xavier school. This article does however approach from a different angle.

This is detailed as below...

The article further goes on to reference the lets go zero campaign goals.

This final article published by the Yorkshire times further outlines the Francis Xavier biodiversity and sustainability commitments. Alongside previous information outlined, this article also notes down further requests made in the letter to Rishi Sunak such as fully electric busses. As well, it also outlines that the school has also taught other schools in its academy trust ways of being sustainable and biodiverse. This article is a good source as it outlines the whole process of  being biodiverse and sustainable.
